The short answer
A parsing credit is not a standard unit. Mailparser and MailParse count one credit as one email. Docparser counts one credit as one document of up to five pages. Parseur counts one credit as one page processed. The same 800 emails a month can therefore cost 800 credits at one vendor and well over 2,000 at another, which is why plans run out early.
Nobody buys an email parser expecting a billing surprise. You count your inbox, find a plan with a bigger number than your count, and move on. Then week three arrives, parsing stops, and you are reading a support article about credit consumption instead of doing the work you bought the tool for.
The reason is almost always the same. Every vendor in this category sells credits, and every vendor defines a credit differently. The word looks like a standard unit, the way a gigabyte is a standard unit, and it is not. It is a billing token whose meaning changes between pricing pages, and the difference is not small. Depending on what lands in your inbox, the same month of mail can consume two or three times more credits at one vendor than another.

What one credit means at each vendor
The definitions below come from each vendor's published pricing documentation. They are the single most important thing to read before choosing a plan, and they are usually in the smallest text on the page.

Why the same mailbox costs wildly different amounts
Take a small operations team parsing 800 supplier emails a month. Roughly 240 of those carry a six page PDF invoice. Nothing unusual about that shape of inbox.
On an email-counted plan, that month is 800 credits. Clean and predictable. On a page-counted plan, the same month is 800 email bodies plus 1,440 attachment pages, and you are suddenly reasoning about a number over 2,200. On a document-counted plan with a five page ceiling, those 240 six page invoices each cross the limit and cost more than one credit, so 800 documents behaves like something north of 1,000.

How many credits will I actually use?
Count a full calendar month of matching messages, not a busy week, then add roughly 30% for seasonal spikes and reprocessing. If your vendor counts pages or documents, multiply by the average page count of what you send through, including attachments. That number, not your inbox count, is the figure to compare against a plan's included volume.
Do test parses use credits?
Usually yes, and this catches people during setup. Building and refining a parsing rule means running the same sample message repeatedly, and on most credit-metered plans each run counts. Ask the vendor directly whether test parses, failed parses and reprocessed messages are billed, because the answer varies and the setup phase is when you run the most.
Four things that quietly inflate credit burn
Attachments on page-counted plans. This is the big one. A supplier who sends a three page statement instead of a one page invoice triples that message's cost, and you find out at the end of the month.
Forwarded threads. A forwarded chain can arrive as one message carrying several original emails as attachments. Depending on the vendor and how the chain was forwarded, that can be counted as one item or as several.
Setup and iteration. Rule-based parsers need a template configured per email layout, and getting it right takes repeated runs against sample messages. Budget credits for the build, not just the steady state.
Automation steps. If you are routing parsed data through Zapier or a similar tool, remember that the parse and the delivery are billed separately. Ask which one applies before you buy, and if parsing stopping would break a downstream process, size the plan with real headroom rather than the cheapest tier that fits on paper.
Does a bigger plan always mean a lower cost per email?
Yes, and the drop is steep. A note on the credit model that does not exist
It is worth saying plainly that credit metering is a vendor convenience, not a law of physics. Flat unlimited tiers do exist. They cost more until a crossover point and then cost nothing extra forever, which is a genuinely different risk profile: you trade a higher floor for the certainty that a busy quarter cannot generate a surprise bill. Whether that trade is worth it depends entirely on how predictable your inbox is.
If your volume is steady and modest, credits are usually cheaper and the metering never bothers you. If your volume is spiky, or if a parsing outage would stall invoicing or order processing, the flat tier is often worth the premium.
